My initial reaction to the speach was, we have got to do something about this. I agree with Mr.Obama that our nation cannot afford to but american soldiers on the soil of Syria. i also believe that our nation is one of the few capable of carrying out an airstrike sending a message to the dictator indicating what we are capable o

After listening and watching Obama's speech, I felt less inclined to respond to what his plan of action was and more so to realize how much information I lack about the subject. I don't have a well filled understanding about the situation in Syria so points he mentions throughout draw blanks in my head as I fail to make connections. Also, aside from the content of the speech itself, it bothered me that it felt as though the speech wasn't even directed at me. It appeared to me that Obama spoke to some location or figure beyond the camera and wasn't looking straight into the lens and into the eyes of the viewer. That made the speech feel a bit less "heart to heart." With the content of the speech, I found myself wanting to yell, "Pathos!" every time he mentioned something about children or family. That feeling came so much that I felt a bit irritated that he kept mentioning it.

My initial reaction to the speak was absolute horror. How could Assad willing kill over a thousand other human beings, men, women, and children, just to win a civil war? How could he not think that other countries would just ignore his acts? Then I started thinking about Hitler, how he stared off by just breaking one international law, and how his only punishment was a "don't do it again". The fact that the other European countries were willing to ignore his actions led to the genocide of the Jewish people. Now we have Assad breaking an international law and he has already already killed over a thousands people in that one act. If the United States, and other countries do not do anything to discipline Assad imagine what he could do next. This action can not go unpunished because "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." (George Santayana). I am willing to see that trying for a diplomatic solution is the best source of action at this time, if Syria is actually willing to go through with it. That also means that I agree strongly with Obama that if diplomacy fails military action becomes necessary.

My initial reaction to the speech was shock of how one person could be so cruel to innocent citizens. Also, how they let one person do such a thing without taking further action from the USA. Obama's speech was focused highly on pathos and he used repetition of buzzwords such as "children", "death", and "tragedy". I believe that he should have used a much more logos focus in his speech. His speech was very moving and heart wrenching but it didn't focus on the facts, it was persuasive when it should have been informative. He danced around the actual topic and repeated death tolls, child casualties, and chemical weapons.
